The rain has abated for now and a silence has settled over on our side of The Mother City. After much coaxing we've managed to get the fire crackling along nicely, bellies full with my mother's soups - samp and beans, and vegetable - and as we hunker down for the night it's hard not to feel empathy as one imagines the plight of those exposed to the elements. It gives a melancholy edge to the water gurgling in gutters and surfing along 'slootjies' and a hopeful sense that the weather might be relenting. And always the reminder that for many the blessing of a dry bed, a warm meal and shelter from the harsh conditions is not yet a reality. And to have gratitude. Maybe if we showed it more, we'd need less showing to be reminded. Have a good night. Be safe, Be warm, Be loved
