It's a beautiful morning in The Mother City, maybe a touch hot already for a road march, but after all the controversy, rumour and hearsay of the last week I'm looking forward to getting out there and just jolling with The Good Hopes. Talk is that we will be able to march from town but that most of the troops will be marching either in Shelley or Burns Street, Salt River. Grateful to be part of this cultural expression that means so much to me in ways and on levels difficult to articulate - hoping that the spirit of the occasion is not dulled by all the hoo-hah that now seems to accompany anything associated with paying homage to this aspect of our heritage. Can't help the consideration that it's symptomatic of much of the issues around identity and cohesion confronting those broadly referred to as 'coloured' and that the thought to keep foremost in mind is the right to self-identify especially with regard to First Nation Peoples. Fraught, yes. Complicated, Layered, I agree. No easy answers, admittedly. But I'm hoping that the spirit of 'onner gan jy my nie kry nie' in the community that inspired my approach to living, will again manifest itself today in a Voorsmaakie of note! Ek gan march! 17 December 2016 #KlopKlop #KlopseForLife #IsKlaWarritSoeIs
