The Heritage Musuem in Simonstown fleshes out the watery narrative around the lived experience of predominantly apocraphylised groups of Capetonians over centuries.
This tangible evidence of hegemony and manifest cultural existence is both a rich resource and celebration of that which was destroyed by Colonialism and Apartheid and now seeks prominence and eminence in the fashioning of the modern, integrated Cape Town.
Beset with the challenges of land restitution and consolidation around prioritizing redress for the survivors of Apartheid - branded a crime against humanity, and the pursuit of the hegemony that supercedes the 'winner takes all' approach of a lifestyle that it preceded, and shows every indication of being superior to.
The proof that what is considered 'Capetonian' is not such a complicated thing - it has ever been that which was forced and enforced upon the people here.
It is a treasure the Museum.
Ighshaan Amlay, one of the Wynberg 7 detained under Apartheid in his youth, is now at the helm of his family's determination to preserve and share the valuable remains of a time when they thrived and grew alongside the rest of their community till they were uprooted and scattered into some other reality - Ocean View being one such where the pain and despair about what transpired in Simonstown in the name of 'Progress', 'Development' and 'Separate But Equal' now battles (with little success) the consequences of dispossesion and cruel disregard.
Notable for many reasons, the Heritage Musuem in Simonstown most tells of the true story of Cape Town.
Without anyone having to say a word.
Igshaan will tell you though.
